Quire Grotesk is the foundry’s first release and still the one that pays for the others. It started as lettering for a wayfinding job in a building with bad sightlines, which is why the counters are as open as they are.
The width axis is the reason to use it. Narrow enough to fit a label into a column, wide enough to hold a headline without looking stretched, and the two ends are drawn rather than interpolated from a single master.
It is deliberately unremarkable at text size. That is a feature. A grotesk with opinions is exhausting by the third paragraph.

Most of a working typeface is not the headline. It is the caption, the figure in a table, the label on a chart nobody will look at twice. Draw those well and the headline mostly takes care of itself.
